Exmouth Town back into the thick of the pre-season action

After the frustrations and disappointments of the close season Town made a welcome return to football action when they entertained Calor Premier League side Bideford last Friday evening, writes John Dibsdall.

Having already played two friendlies, the North Devon side, three leagues above Town in the national pyramid, quickly settled into their stride and their match sharpness soon showed. They went ahead in the twenty second minute with a thirty yard pile driver that gave returning ‘keeper Grant Fisher no chance.

It was strange to see Town’s former talisman, Lloyd Gardner, appearing for the opposition, Lloyd having made the move in the close season. For Town the majority of last season’s squad are committed to trying to achieve promotion once again and former Exeter City star Barry McConnell made his debut for the club.

At half time Manager Richard Pears made several changes as he took the opportunity to have a look at some local players and they all distinguished themselves well as Town restricted the visitors to a solitary goal scored from a far post header following a corner two minutes into the second half.

This Saturday Town are home to another Calor League side when Tiverton Town are the visitors kick off 3pm.

Town supporters last Friday will have noticed the new ‘enlarged’ dugouts that now conform to the changes to the grading regulations that were introduced last September and was one of the main reasons why the clubs promotion was refused. Work is also progressing to the covered stand damaged in the winter storms and work is due to commence to refurbish the floodlights before the start of the season.
