Budleigh Salterton Reserves 2, Exmouth Amateurs 5

Even though we are only a third way into the season this derby clash with Exmouth Amateurs had become a six pointer between two teams locked in the relegation struggle, writes SpursTom.

Whoever won would have bragging rights until the return fixture.

Also it was the first league meeting between these bitter rivals for many a year.

Having watched the youth game earlier in the day, this followed the same pattern, with Budleigh gaining early advantage with a seventh minute Josh Kirby goal, and as Exmouth Amateurs pressed for an equalizer, they were gifted two goals within a minute of each other, both from set-pieces.

In the 16th and 17th minutes Mitchell Cudd headed in twice. Just over midway in the half a misjudgement allowed Craig Higham to speed away and net against his old team.

Just after the interval the Robins hopes were raised with a sweet strike by David Radford to pull it back to 3-2.

However, they again they found themselves two goals behind, as, on 58 minutes, another old boy, Leigh Begam, punished hesitation in the area.

Craig Higham was dismissed on 71 minutes after two bookings, and, as with all local derbies at times, it got a little feisty, however I must emphasize it was never dirty!

It was the 10 men-from Warrenview who made sure they went home with all the points, Matt Cousins scoring his side’s fifth goal in the final minutes.

The 5–2 victory saw Ammies leap-frog the Robins in the table. At times I found it hard to understand why these two are in the position they find themselves, maybe they’ve had unsettled sides, I wish them both good luck.
