Exmouth Town 2, Newton Abbot Spus 0

Exmouth Town’s recent fine run continued with a competent 2-0 victory over Newton Abbot Spurs in the Devon Premier Cup, writes John Dibsdall.

This was a workmanlike performance with Town never quite reaching the heights of some of their recent performances partly due to the inactivity of the past two weeks and partly due to the clinging playing surface.

The opening twenty minutes saw both sides sparring with one another with minimal goalmouth action. On twenty one minutes Ace High had the first real chance but saw his initial shot blocked and then his header from the rebound tipped over the crossbar. Town were now in the ascendency and Dan Boere had a shot saved before Town went ahead on thirty four minutes. A first time whipped cross from Lloyd Gardner saw High get in front of his marker and sweep the ball home. Two minutes later and Town could have added the second but Boere saw his twenty two yard free kick cannon back off the crossbar.

Town did go further ahead seven minutes into the second half. A forceful defensive header from Ben Clay found Gardner in space and his spectacular volley gave the ‘keeper no chance.

As Town made changes the visitors saw more of the ball but were unable to make any inroads into Town’s defence well marshalled by Sam Woodin and man of the match Clay. Such was their superiority the visitors did not have one effort on target although they did come close on seventy six minutes with a glancing header.

Town boss Richard Pears said: “The team did everything I asked of them. To deny a quality outfit like Newton Abbot Spurs a single shot at our goal throughout the second half speaks volumes for the way we dealt with the occasion and the game. The run continues and long may it last.”

This result puts Town into the quarter finals with the draw being made next Monday (December 10).

This Saturday Town are again in Cup action when Penryn Athletic are the visitors to Southern Round in the third round of the Throgmorton Cup kick off 2.30pm. The visitors are currently fourth in the SWPL West Division having won seven and drawn three of their fourteen league games.
