Exmouth Town 7, Galmpton 1

Town maintained their remarkable run with another emphatic victory over a fancied Galmpton United side, writes John Dibsdall.

Indeed last weeks Sunday Independent designated this game their ‘Match to Catch’ stating that: “Exmouth will have their promotion credentials examined by a Galmpton side in tremendous form”.

The match was decided in a six-minute spell either side of half time when Town scored four times without reply!

The first forty minutes was an entertaining tussle between two sides that appeared at that stage to be evenly matched. Town had led in the tenth minute with a first goal of the season from Sam Woodin.

The lead was short lived as the visitors equalised with a spectacular half volley from fully thirty yards that had ‘goal’ written all over it from the moment it was struck.

Back came Town and Dan Boere hit the post but in an open game of flowing football Galmpton also created chances and could have taken the lead.

The all important second goal came on forty one minutes. Ben Shephard skipped past his marker and his measured cross was rammed home by Boere. Three minutes later Ace High and Lloyd Gardner combined to set up Boere for his second.

Any stragglers still finishing their half time cuppa in the clubhouse would have missed Town’s fourth as Gardner set up Boere for his hat trick within thirty seconds of the restart. I had barely finished writing my notes and it was five as High raced through to finish in the corner.

As Town continued to press Adam Fowler had a shot cleared off the line before his cross to the far post was headed home by High on sixty nine minutes.

Shephard saw a twenty yard curler graze the outside of the post before he crossed for Boere to head home and complete the scoring with his fourth and Town’s seventh.

Whilst Boere will rightly take the plaudits for his four goal haul, including that hat trick in five minutes, this was a splendid all round team performance and the “Man of the Match” award could have been given to a number of players including the opposition ‘keeper who despite being beaten seven times brought off a number of noteworthy saves.

This Saturday Town host Exeter Civil Service in the quarter finals of the Devon Premier Cup kick off at Southern Road is 2.15pm with extra time and penalties if necessary.

The sides have yet to meet in the league although ironically they were scheduled to play at Southern Road on Saturday. Civil are currently ninth in the league having won seven and lost seven of their eighteen league matches.
