Exmouth Town net seven at Elburton Villa

PUBLISHED: 12:02 28 August 2014

Exmouth Town secured their first victory of the season with an emphatic performance at Elburton Villa winning 7-3 and going one goal better than the 6-1 victory at the Plymouth based ground last year, writes John Dibsdall.

Town made the perfect start with Alex Greening taking full advantage of a poor clearance to lob the stranded ‘keeper from twenty five yards and opening the scoring with just five minutes played. Ten minutes later and a fine move involving Barry McConnell led to James Ansell picking out Greening who made no mistake driving the ball home from twelve yards.

There then followed a ten minute spell which Town would want to forget as defensive mistakes allowed the hosts to level the score. To their credit Town continued to press forward and were rewarded when an excellent free kick from Greening was turned in at the far post by central defender Simon Lawton for his debut goal in his first full start for Town. Another excellent free kick from McConnell resulted in a powerful header from Ansell as Town went into the break 4-2 ahead.

The second half was virtually one way traffic. Jordan Hopkins scored his debut goal following another Greening cross on fifty five minutes and astute build up play by Matt Dawson led to Ansell completing his hat trick with goals in the seventy fifth and eighty ninth minutes. As Town continued to attack they were exposed at the back and the Villa added a consolation goal in added time.

This Saturday Town are at home to Camelford who have drawn three and won one of their five matches played including a 2-2 draw with Elmore last Saturday. Town will be looking to consolidate on their victory last week but one surprising factor lies in the goals against column. Last season Town boasted the meanest defence in the league conceding just twenty eight goals in their thirty eight games whilst this term they have already conceded eight in just three games played.
