Exmouth Town continued their build up to the new season with an excellent work out against Calor League side Tiverton Town, going down 2-1 to a goal in the final minute of added time, writes Steve Birley.

Last year’s leading goal scorer, Ace High, opened the scoring with a powerful header and Town were good value for their half-time lead.

High nearly doubled the lead when he struck a post, but as Tiverton came more into the game Town were forced to defend, something they did so as a unit, showing good discipline and determination. They were unfortunate to concede a very soft penalty in the last minute of normal time and then had a much stronger shout for a penalty themselves turned away.

To add salt to the wound Tivvy then broke away and scored with a header to condemn Town to a defeat their overall performance did not deserve.

However, despite the reversal Town boss Richard Pears will have been pleased with several aspects of his side’s play.

This Friday evening Town are at home to former South West Peninsula League outfit Dartmouth with a 7.45pm kick off.

Next Wednesday (July 30), Town host the Royal Marines and that match kicks off at 7.30pm.

Meanwhile, off the Southern Road pitch work has begun on the installation of the upgraded floodlights.

There was one major issue though! The new lamps are a lot bigger than the existing ones and so do not fit to the current brackets! Once the work is completed the Southern Road lighting will be of the highest order.
