Exmouth Town 4, Axminster Town 0

Town retained their season-long league unbeaten run with a comprehensive victory over the visitors, writes John Dibsdall.

This was not a game for the purists or the faint hearted!

The visitors, who had suffered a 4-1 cup reverse at Southern Road three weeks previously ago, came determined that the home side would not enjoy the same time or space in which to build their game and a bruising encountered followed.

The opening twenty five minutes was littered with niggling fouls, but Town began to force the pace and the visitor’s ill-discipline cost them when a reckless challenge on Adam Fowler resulted in a penalty that Andrew Thomson duly converted.

Axminster’s one chance of the first half came on forty minutes when a superb strike from Alex Wheatley hit the underside of the bar and to Town’s relief rebounded to safety.

This strike showed that the visitors were capable of playing football and it required a superb finger tip save from Liam Jones to prevent an equaliser in the opening minute of the second half, pushing a point blank header onto the crossbar.

This was the closest the visitors were to come to a goal as Town went on to dominate the second half. Their strength, steel and determination came through as they scored three goals in a ten minute spell.

On sixty minutes a cross from Thomson was only partially cleared and Ace High reacted quickest to head home.

Two minutes later Dan Boere headed the third from a well taken free kick and the goal of the game came on seventy minutes when a superb passing move was finished by High scoring from the edge of the box.

Boere twice went close in the final minutes and Lloyd Gardner struck a twenty yard drive against the crossbar. Town’s goals corers in this match were coincidentally exactly the same as the 4-1 cup win.

This win takes Town up to second in the table, one point behind leaders Budleigh Salterton but with four games in hand.

They are without a game this Saturday as their scheduled fixture at Okehampton has been postponed as their hosts are involved in a twice postponed Devon Premier Cup Tie.

The break has come at a good time as both Ben Shephard and Phil Everett were substituted with hamstring strains and Kerry Butler has been sidelined for the last three weeks with a knee injury.
