Exmouth Town manager Richard Pears has swooped into the market to sign a long-term target.

The Southern Road boss has been chasing Andrew Thompson for some time and finally secured his signature this week to add even greater depth and quality to his exciting squad.

Pears says: “He (Thompson) is a player I have long held in high regard. He can play in a number of positions, but for me he is best in the ‘hole’ behind the striker or strikers. He will certainly provide something different for us and it is another piece in the jig saw which is really beginning to look the part here at Town.”

Meanwhile the Town chief was full of praise for the way his team dug themselves out of a hole in their game at University in Exeter last weekend.

He said: “At half-time we were so far off the pace I asked the lads if they had started to believe the things people are saying and writing about them! I reminded them that just as quickly as they make headlines, they can also be the brunt of jokes across the footballing world. The clear thing is, and this was a real positive for me last weekend was that, to a man, I could see that it was hutting them at the break against University and in the second half we put things right, very right.”

He continued: “Its reassuring to know that the players recognise when they need to step up the tempo. The second half at University was as good as we have played over a short period. However, now the key for this team is to find a level of regular consistency that will allow them to go on and enjoy the fruits of their hard work and honest endeavour. To date things have been going very well, better than I expected if I am totally honest. But that does not mean we can rest on our laurels. In many ways I am glad that we have such a tough game this coming Saturday with what looks, on paper, and certainly historically, as a tricky trip to Stoke Gabriel. They are a powerful side and if we are lack lustre as we were against the University over the first 45 minutes last weekend then we will be in a very uncomfortable place come half-time and no, I don’t want to be throwing tea cups round the dressing room!”
