Exmouth Town and Budleigh Salterton are both in Throgmorton Cup action on Saturday, and both play away, writes Steve Birley.

Exmouth Town continue their association this season with cup competitions on the penultimate Saturday of September as they head for Exeter and a meeting with University in the Throgmorton Cup.

Fresh from last weekend’s marvellous triumph at Toolstation League top flight side Wells City, Town must now negotiate the large home pitch the students play on to hopefully make progress in what is the league Cup for the South West Peninsula League sides.

Town boss Richard Pears says of the task ahead: “They (University) do have a larger playing surface, one they play very well on. Historically Town have not done too well playing there and so I’ll be looking for more of the same from last Saturday at Wells. We trained hard and well in midweek to prepare in the correct manner. I sense a real desire and a buzz in the Southern Road dressing room, but the one thing I cannot impress enough on the players is the need to keep their feet very firmly on the floor. We must not allow ourselves to fall into any form of complacency. Just because we delivered the goods on a Toolstation League top flight ground seven days before, most certainly does not mean we can pitch up at the University ground and expect things to happen for us. The task is to play our own game, win individual and collective battles in areas of the pitch, and hopefully still be in the competition at 5pm.”

Budleigh Salterton have a trip to Premier Division Cullompton Rangers to negotiate. Danny Williams side travel to Speeds Meadow off the back of a disappointing midweek home defeat to Exeter Civil Service. However, the Mid Devon outfit were clobbered 8-1 the nought before the Robins had their wings clipped, that a second successive 8-1 defeat as Culy were knocked out of the FA Vase last Saturday, beaten 8-1 at Toolstation side Odd Down.

With both Exmouth Town and Budleigh away this weekend the spotlight locally falls on the local derby at Warrenview between Exmouth Amateurs and Topsham Town in the Fresha League, Premier Division (3pm).

Budleigh Reserves entertain Thorverton in another top flight game whilst East Budleigh host Tiverton Town Reserves in a Division One meeting.

Lympstone have home advantage for their Division Three game with Tedburn St Mary and Exmouth Town Reserves will grace Southern Road for a Division Four derby meeting with Exmouth Amateurs. Woodbury host Axminster Town Reserves in a Division Four game.
