Exmouth Town all set for big home cup tie with Newton Abbot Spurs

After last Saturday’s complete washout of all fixtures in the South West Peninsula League Town will be hoping for better luck this Saturday when Newton Abbot Spurs visit Southern Road in the third round of the Devon Premier Cup, writes John Dibsdall.
In accordance with the rules of the competition, kick off is 2pm with extra time and penalties if necessary.
When the sides met in a league fixture earlier in the season Town twice had to come from a goal down thanks to efforts from Ben Shephard before a Dan Boere strike in added time secured a 3-2 victory.
Last season Town reached the quarter finals of this competition before losing on penalties to Torquay based Upton Athletic.
The Newton Abbot Spurs away form is impressive this term. In seven outings they have lost twice, that September 12 defeat at Southern Road and a 2-1 reversal at Budleigh Salterton.
They shared six goals last time out in a 3-3 draw at Axminster Town whilst they have won at Galmpton (5-0), Sidmouth Town (1-0), Stoke Gabriel (1-0) and Totnes and Dartington (5-3).
Town boss Richard Pears says: “Whilst I make no secret of the fact that then league is our main priority this Graddon Vending Cup is most certainly then sort of prestigious trophy that Exmouth Town can be looking to win. It’s also in my mind that we meet Newton Abbot Spurs two just 14 days after this cup tie, at their place in the return league encounter and a powerful show and positive result on Saturday would put us in the box seat for that league game on December 15.”
December promises much for unbeaten Town as they have six games to play in just 28 days starting with the Newton Abbot Spurs Cup tie.
A week later they host Penryn Athletic from the Western Division of the SWP league for a place in the last eight of the Throgmorton Cup and then they have that league trip to Newton Spurs followed by a December 22 home game with another of the fancied sides, Teignmouth Town.
That’s followed by the Boxing Day derby at Southern Road against Budleigh and the year ends with a Saturday, December 29 trip to Appledore.
