Exmouth Spartans suffer first defeat of the season

PUBLISHED: 08:30 13 October 2017

Exmouth Spartans lost their 100 per cent record this season as they went down to a 4-2 defeat at home to a Bravehearts side that they had beaten 3-0 in a Football Express Cup tie meeting just a fortnight before.

The Mid Devon side began well, clearly looking to avenge that previous defeat and they took an 18th minute lead through Stephen Alford.

That set the tone for a first half that saw Bravehearts control proceedings for the most part. However, just before the break, a sweet volley from Kyle Harris sent the teams into the interval locked at 1-1.

In the second half the game followed a similar pattern with the visitors bossing much of the contest. After going close a number of times, Bravehearts regained the lead in the 61st minute through Tylor Grigg and, 13 minutes later, it was 3-1 as Alford bagged his second of the contest.

It got worse for Spartans, who fell further behind to an 81st minute Grigg goal. They did have the final say with a late second, scored by Rob Welsman, but, on this occasion, Spartans were well beaten by the better side on the day and they will need to show a good response when they face the same opposition in a return league game at their Silver Street, Willand, home on the final Saturday of the month.

This Saturday (October 14), Spartans travel to face Park Rangers who were 5-2 winners over Bradworthy in a North Devon League Intermediate Two meeting in Saturday. Park Rangers have scored 26 goals in seven games so far this season. The game will be the first at home for the side since a Circus was put up on their pitch at the end of last month!
