Exeter City extended their winning league run to four games, last Saturday, with a sensational 4-2 victory at then third place Oxford United, making it nine points out of nine and nine goals on the road this season. writes Richard Tuson.

This also ended promotion-tipped Oxford’s 100 percent home record and it means that they have not beaten the Grecians, in a league fixture, since 1981. The result keeps Exeter in second place in league two just one point behind leaders Gillingham.

Oxford started well, winning a corner after just 27 seconds of play, but for all their early possession they seemed to break down outside the penalty box. Exeter started the scoring after 10 minutes. Scott Bennett won the ball in the City half, passed to Liam Sercombe whose 70 yard run set up Jamie Cureton to drill the ball into the top corner from 20 yards.

Bennett made it 2- 0 when he headed Sercombe’s corner home in the 26th minute. Cureton made it 3-0 , and his fifth goal of the season, just after half time, when he turned his marker and chipped the keeper from a tight angle.

Exeter thought they were home and dry but Oxford staged a comeback, scoring two goals in eight minutes. The first was from the penalty spot after Craig Woodman’s challenge on Damian Butt was judged to be illegal by referee Simpson and Jake Forester-Caskey converted the spot kick. Oxford’s second came from Alfie Potter finishing from close range.

John O’Flynn restored City’s comfort zone when he made it 4-2 after 71 minutes and sent the 700 travelling supporters delirious. O’Flynn, who was in the team as a replacement to the injuried Alan Gow, picked up Sercombe’s pass, beat his marker and fired into the far corner of the net.

Oxford brought on substitute James Constable, who has always been a thorn in the side of Exeter over the years, but only lasted eight minutes when he was sent off for his second bookable offence.

Exeter could have increased their lead in the closing stages but didn’t capitalise on their chances, but it was a fine display in front of a crowd of 6,405.

●Exeter are next in action at St James’ Park this Saturday when they entertain newly promoted York City 3pm kick off. This sees the return of former Exeter favourite John Challenor.
