Exeter is among the top five happiest cities in the UK, according to a recent press article which drew conclusions from an analysis of millions of photographs from a social media site, writes Gareth Thomas.

Whilst none of us would in any way want to dispute this, unfortunately the City’s football team, certainly up to last Tuesday was not enjoying the success on the pitch and Grecian fans have had little to smile about.

Clearly though there was huge disappointment with another defeat last Saturday as the Grecians went down to a 2-1 defeat at AFC Wimbledon. As in the Bristol game City took an early lead when the Dons defence was under pressure gave away an own goal in the 4th minute. It was another good start by the Grecians which included Matt Grimes forcing the keeper into a near post save and an effort from Jimmy Keohane who headed over from close range. City had started with some fluid attacking football and the Dons had their best chance just after half an hour’s play and then began to enjoy more possession. Unfortunately they made this count and were able to celebrate their first home goal in the 37th minute. A couple of game changers came at the beginning of the second half. One was when Matt Grimes was scythed down right in front of the referee, and which took the City player out of the game to take no further part in proceedings. The second game changer was a clear penalty when Tom Nicholls was bought down in the box, but typical of City’s current fortunes, no spot kick was awarded!

By now the Dons were in the ascendancy and scored the winner in the 74th minute. On Tuesday evening City welcomed Oxford United to St James Park who have the best away record in the league having not lost a game away from home all season. The result was certainly an enjoyable game and both sides played out an entertaining, yet goalless 0-0 draw. Exeter pressured Oxford especially in the second half but struggled to make it count in front of goal. Against a well practised resilient Oxford side, City’s defence and midfield play did get the better of United, but again could not make it count in the final third and in front of goal despite all their good work. There was also good news in that Matt Oakley was on the bench after three months out through injury, and Jimmy Keohane who has not been a first team regular, put in an impressive performance and rightfully was man of the match. Whilst City have still have lots to do and need to start winning games again, there was a mood around the ground that this was a step in the right direction and there were plenty of smiling faces to confirm that!

This Saturday the Grecian face another away trip to Burton Albion whose midweek game to Torquay was postponed. Still in a play-off position, Burton lost their last game to Fleetwood. The next game at St James Park will be on Tuesday February 4, when Citys under-21 side host their counterparts from Burnley FC in the quarter final of the Premier League cup. In their last two games at home in the cup the Grecians have seen off Southampton and Blackburn Rovers under-21 teams. Come on you Reds!
