East Budleigh suffer defeat double on opening day

12:02 28 August 2014

Archant

Both East Budleigh sides took to the field under strength last Saturday for varying reasons and both were on the wrong end of the score line, writes Mark Auton.

The Reserves were given hope of gaining something from their game against Newton St Cyres when substitute and debutant Kieran Tullett finished with aplomb with his left peg when put clear by Matt Thomas on the hour.

Budleigh were second best in the first half; the Exeter side being kept out by keeper Rob Dance until grabbing a lead five minutes before the break.

The closest Budleigh came was from a Rory Waite drive that the away keeper was able to parry.

Unfortunately for Budleigh a second goal for the visitors on 73 minutes saw them claim the points.

Another replacement on debut Sam Smith headed just wide and Paul May saw his shot blocked as Budleigh made a late effort to grab a point.

For Budleigh a mention should be made to Kev ‘Tubby’ Hawthorne who stepped in at the last minute and did not let the side down.

This Saturday they visit Dunkeswell looking to bounce back, whilst the First XI, who were beaten 2-0 at Tiverton side Westexe, will also look to do the same when they host Alphington. (both games kick-off at 3pm).
