East Budleigh Reserves suffer same old woes as sloppy goals seal their fate against Starcross Generals

East Budleigh Reserves 2, Starcross Generals 4

East Budleigh Reserves completed their campaign with a home defeat against a good Starcross outfit, writes Mark Auton.

Budleigh’s failing this season has seen them concede some sloppy goals and that was the case again in this one.

A fine early save from Budleigh keeper Mark Bown was followed by Budleigh opening the scoring on 14 minutes when Dan Reynolds was on hand to pick up the pieces after Ben Wyatt’s effort was saved.

But ten minutes later poor marking from a set piece saw the away side level.

The front pair of Matt Thomas and Dan Atkinson were linking up well and it was the former who had a great chance to restore the lead but ballooned over.

There was a brisk start to the second period as Starcross went ahead two minutes in before Budleigh levelled in the 51st minute; The visiting keeper was unable to hold a free-kick from Matt Jones and it was Atkinson that pounced to score.

A Starcross attacker was given far too much room minutes later as the pendulum swung the other way once again.

In what was an entertaining game Budleigh continued to get chances and when Joe Rosser squared for Atkinson his controlled finish was cleared off the line.

A well taken fourth for their opponents gave Budleigh an uphill task, but were unlucky not to reduce the arrears when Atkinson was wrongly denied by the offside flag when set up by Damien Mortimore.
