East Budleigh end Fresha League season with draw at Heavitree

Heavitree Social 3, East Budleigh 3

East Budleigh completed their league campaign with a share of the points at Heavitree, but will have been disappointed not to have won the game after leading 3-0 at the break, writes Mark Auton.

Budleigh produced a top drawer first half and Mike White went close for the Jays before they took a 22nd minute lead.

Jack Howarth it was who scored a fine individual goal with a run from the halfway line and an accomplished finish.

Six minutes later Howarth produced a fine cut back to claim an assist from which Dan Atkinson converted Budleigh’s second from close range.

Budleigh were ruthless at this stage! The never-say-die attitude of Aiden Martin saw him win the ball back, set up Atkinson and he turned and fired into the roof of the net.

The hosts’ linesman denied Budleigh a fourth flagging for offside against Howarth although it was Atkinson who scored!

The match official consulted his assistant and the goal was wiped off!

The home side looked a totally different side in the second half and were back in the game three minutes after the re-start.

Minute’s later Budleigh linesman John West flagged in for offside as Heavitree scored their second, but the referee over-ruled his assistant!

The levelling goal eventually came from the penalty spot with Budleigh keeper Rob Dance a fingertip away from keeping it out.

Dance then made a couple more fine saves, while Budleigh had another goal chalked off when Howarth was offside from a Josh Sale free-kick.

For Budleigh Sale and Howarth both worked tirelessly.

It has been a good season for this East Budleigh side who have blooded a number of young players and finish in a very respectable mid-table position.

They will now look to build on this squad going into the new season and to challenge for the promotion positions.
