East Budleigh were denied a third consecutive win after the students of Exeter snatched a last gasp winner last Saturday at Vicarage Road, writes Mark Auton.

Budleigh should have been out of sight after dominating the first half, but somehow found themselves a goal behind at the interval.

A good early spell from Budleigh saw them win a string of corners from which the deliveries by Josh Sale and Alex Manning respectively caused mayhem in the opposing area, whilst the best chance saw Mike White’s header cleared off the line after he followed up a rasping drive from Dan Atkinson that struck the bar.

Midway through the half the Budleigh defence allowed a University attacker to turn and fire in a shot that gave keeper Rob Dance no chance.

Despite the goal Budleigh continued to have the better of things; Aiden Martin fired just wide when picking up a clearance from the Uni keeper and Sale was agonisingly wide from a free-kick as half-time approached.

Eleven minutes after the re-start Budleigh deservedly levelled; A free-kick from Andy Case found its way to the far post where Steve Hitchcock finished in style driving the ball past the visiting keeper.

Budleigh went in search of the winner with Josh Whiller denied by a good challenge, but it was the Exeter side that won it from a long throw in the 90th minute.

For Budleigh Dan Reynolds worked hard in the centre of the park.

This evening (Thursday) Budleigh are away to neighbours Budleigh Salterton in the Morrison Bell Cup (7.30pm) and on Saturday make the trip to Bow in the league.
