East Devon Grecians - the latest from the local supporters group of Exeter City

PUBLISHED: 12:02 28 August 2014 | UPDATED: 12:02 28 August 2014

The visitors to St James Park last Saturday were York City who had drawn all three of their previous three league games, writes Gareth Hughes.

The Grecian faithful will have been hoping for a change in fortune, and to claim their first win of the season after stuttering start to their league campaign which has included a credible draw against Portsmouth, but two defeats at the hands of Plymouth and Burton.

There was plenty of good news from the game which saw Paul Tisdale tinker with his team set up, moving central defender Scott Bennett into the attacking line up alongside Graham Cummings with Midfielder Matt Oakley taking a position of a centre half. City started brightly and within six minutes fans favourite David Wheeler scored from a fine header from a ball crossed by Matt Oakley.

City then continued to control the game with the Minstermen not showing too much up front, and when they did there were no real cutting edge to their attacking play and were dealt with by the City defence.

The second half saw a more spirited York performance, and they were able to place more pressure on the Grecians, although in fairness they had were not allowed any clear chances.

Equally the Grecians had opportunities at the other end but couldn’t convert into what would have been a winning goal. There was a feeling that Exeter were running out of steam, and unfortunately there was late drama, with an equaliser came in the shape of a York header from a in swinging corner with just 10 minutes left on the clock. With the final score 1-1 and the points shared Paul Tisdale, whilst disappointed with a goal conceded from a set piece , was able to take lots of positives from the game and his players the performance.

He said: “I’m really proud of the players’ commitment, they know how important the points are.”

Overall the opposition in the first games and the schedule have been a tough start for the City side. Thankfully there is no midweek game this week which will give the players and coaching staff a chance to refocus and prepare for Saturdays away trip to Northampton. who are in 13th place in the league with one win, two draws and a defeat. We will all be hoping that City can build on last week’s positive performance and an away win would be a massive early season boost.

Other news from the Club is that Paul Tisdale has made his second signing of the season. Twice capped Welsh international Christian Ribeiro has joined the squad. Ribeiro is a 24-year-old right sided defender.

The next home game for City is on Saturday week (September 6) when Mansfield Town are the visitors.
