East Budleigh 2, Chard Town 4

For the first half an hour of this cup match East Budleigh outplayed their opponents with some superb passing, writes Mark Auton.

After 51 minutes the hosts were 2-0 up, but two goals in eight minutes gave the opposing side the impetuous to go on and win the game.

Budleigh began well on what was another well prepared surface by groundsman Richard Slade and went ahead after just eight minutes.

A clearance from Budleigh stopper Rob Dance found its way to Si Tuley who, from outside the penalty area on the left, hit an exquisite finish across the keeper and into the far corner of the net.

With the very next attack it could have been two but Ryan Britton had his shot charged down when latching onto a Dave Evans centre.

At this stage Tim Whiteoak and Aaron Denny were controlling the midfield and with the supply of Evans on the right the service to strikers Tuley and Jack Howarth was good as both also went close.

At the other end Chard began to come into the game in the latter part of the half with both Phil Page and Steve Hitchcock called upon to make timely tackles.

In the early second half exchanges Dance had to be at his best to save well and it was Budleigh who scored again six minutes in; Britton in the right place to take advantage of a loose pass to drill the ball past the visiting keeper

The loss of Howarth to injury lost Budleigh’s effectiveness to hold the ball up and seven minutes later Chard reduced the arrears before carving Budleigh open to level on 65

The visitors were now on top and were denied a third by Dance who showed good agility to palm another chance over.

Thirteen minutes from the end the away side went ahead for the first time and Budleigh’s fate was confounded when the referee awarded Chard a penalty and harshly gave Page a second yellow, when previous misdemeanours had been ignored.

The kick was converted to send Budleigh out.

This Saturday Budleigh return to league action at Tipton and need to take heart from the football played in the first part of this game.

East Budleigh Reserves had their cup-tie at St Martins cancelled out, but return to league action against Feniton at Vicarage Road this Saturday.
