Archant

In front of a good sized crowd it was East Budleigh that came out on top in this local derby with better quality paying dividends in the end.

Defending into the wind in the first half East Budleigh had to weather many Budleigh attacks, but none that really troubled glovesman Mark ‘Crouchy’ Bown.

Towards the end of the half East Budleigh took the lead; A well struck corner from George Harris caused problems in the box and it was Dan Atkinson who was quickest to react, looping a header over two players on the line and into the net.

Early in the second half the home side were awarded a debatable penalty that was converted by Alex Wicks.

Despite this East Budleigh started to assert their passing game and regained the lead when a good move down the right found Liam Matthew who drilled a low shot under the keeper at the near post.

Following this a free-kick into the area by Steve Hitchcock was met well by the hard working Hugo Demetre for the twinkle toed Liam West who found the space to put the ball into the bottom corner.

To round things off Man of the Match Harris scored the goal of the game; He found himself on the edge of the area. His first shot was blocked, but not to be denied, he curled a glorious shot into the top corner.

The Blue Jays will be happy with the bragging rights, but happier still to be in pole position at the top of the table.

Tomorrow (Saturday) East Budleigh make the short trip across to Lympstone for what is a very important fixture against a side with a 100 per cent league record.
