Aaron Denny scored twice as Budleigh Salterton bounced back from their pre-Christmas defeat at St Martins to defeat Sidmouth Town 3-1 in the Boxing Day East Devon derby.
The Greenway Lane surface held up superbly, despite the previous day’s rain that had washed away much of the South West Peninsula League Eastern Division programme.
The opening 20 minutes saw action at either end as both sides looked to play on the front foot.
The opening goal came in the 20th minute and the architect of the goal was Budleigh midfielder George Pannell, who got around his man before pulling the ball back to a supporting Aaron Denny, who drilled it home from 20 yards.
Fifteen minutes later Callum Shipton worked his way into a position to cross from the right and his well-flighted delivery was met by a clinical finish from Jordan Harris to double the home lead.
Just before the break Sidmouth Town got a goal back with Sean Densham the scorer, leaving Budleigh glovesman Chris Wright – deputising for regular stopper Alan Doble – having no chance of keeping it out.
However, just five minutes into the second half, the home two-goal lead was restored when Denny received the ball some 25 yards from goal and advanced a few yards to create sufficient space to get his shot away and the ball arrowed its way into the net, much to the joy of most of the three figure crowd at Greenway Lane.
Sidmouth gave as good as they got for long periods of the contest but the closest they came to scoring a second was in the 85th minute when substitute Rikki Pitter saw his shot come back off the upright, though it did seem as if Wright had the effort covered.
