Newtown 4, Budleigh Salterton Reserves 3
The Robins Reserves were edged out on their visit to Fresha League Premier Division title-chasing Newtown, writes SpursTom.
The Robins felt confident of a possible upset against one of the title favourites, who looked heavy-footed in the early exchanges going 0-2 down within 18 minutes to some neat inter play and unstoppable strikes by captain for the day Karl Riddell and Aarron Denny.
Moments later the deficit was halved by Ben Howard, who earlier somehow missed an open goal! Just before the interval a very hash penalty was awarded to Newtown for hands following an awkward bounce (ball to hand) and Ashley Barker slammed the spot kick home to send the teams into the interval on level terms.
The hosts came out of the traps like greyhounds, gaining numerous corners one of which was partly cleared, the ball was returned back into Budleigh’s area resulting in another penalty decision, once again Ashley Barker punished his old club. This period of superiority was most productive to the home side increasing the gap to 4-2 on 61 minutes; Niall Power adding the finishing touch. Unlike last season, the Robins refused to lie down, coming back strongly.
Reece Stevens, with the pass of the day, set Sam Schlaefli free and he made no mistake to make it 4-3.
The majority of the pressure was now coming from the visitors without success. The Budleigh Man of the Match award was shared by Karl Riddell and Aarron Denny.
