Budleigh Salterton Reserves 0, St Martins 6

It turned out to be a somewhat bizarre afternoon at Greenway Lane where Budleigh Salterton hoped not only to regain some pride but maybe, just maybe perhaps spring a shock with at least a point against visiting St Martins, who gave them a trouncing away last month, the result may not suggest they achieved either, but I can assure you they fought hard, writes SpursTom.

We were about ten minutes into the match before it was realized the opposition being in black, were wearing the same coloured tops as not only the home keeper, but also the referee! The matter was resolved, including the man in the middle, having to put a green bib over his shirt.

That was the only eventful situation in the first quarter of an hour until a free-kick was awarded to St Martins; Nathan Melton’s kick skidded off the surface just in front of Jordan Hockold and slipped through his hands and into the net. Callum Shipton went closest for the Robins who were holding their own, but just before the half hour mark the condition of the pitch in the home side’s goal area played a part in the second goal, in attempting a clearance from a low left sided cross, the ball ricocheted off the defender and into the net. It got worse for Budleigh for having missed at the other end, they were under attack again, Hockhold rushed out to the oncoming attacker and was accidently hit in the head, he carried on after treatment but moments later went down and had to be substituted (as he was in the previous meeting between the two). Into the action came Alex Richardson for his first outing following a bout of glandular fever. With injury time approaching he was left helpless when a corner was partially cleared, and Darren Eshun smashed the third home to complete the first half scoring.

When things are not going your way you are doomed. Directly from the resumption the Robins went on the attack with Callun Shipton again bringing out a save from the visiting glovesman, who’s long punt up field was chased by two players, both ended on the ground in the box, and the official pointed to the spot; Andrew Brooks did not miss. It became noticeable why St Martins are chasing the title, having seen them twice this season I now believe they are a more accomplished unit, with more dangerous players than Feniton. Their fifth goal was somehow fortuitous, Nathan Melton rushed in whilst Robins glovesman Richardson was about to clear a back pass, and as the kick was taken the attacker turned his back and the ball hit him on the shoulder and looped back over and into the net!

The Robins stopper redeemed himself soon after with a brilliant save. Melton rounded off the scoring with his hat-trick goal.

Team: Hockold (Richardson 36mins), Pearce, Nield, Riddell, Kirby, Radford (Pidgeon 67mins), Gloyn (capt), Higham, Shipton, Martin (Richards), Hill. Sub not used West.
