Budleigh leading comfortbaly when match is abandoned

Archant

Budleigh Salterton 3, Axminster Town 0

Match abandoned after 38 minutes.

Budleigh were comfortably in charge of this game and three goals to the good when the referee abandoned the match seven minutes before half-time, writes Alan Beer.

The Robins made a superb start to the contest and were ahead in the very first minute when Carl Everest rifled a shot home from fully 25-yards.

Minutes later they were close to doubling their lead when Jack Greenslade found Mark Lever with a cross from the right. The resulting header from Lever

was very well saved by the Axminster keeper Matt Long. Playing their best football of the season, the Robins doubled their lead on 11 minutes when Lever had a 20-yard effort deflected beyond Long and into the visitors net.

On the half hour mark the visitors had their best chance so far, but a lobbed effort from Ben Vine dropped onto the roof of the net.

Budleigh were quick to react and a long clearance was cleverly flicked on by Harry Nodwell for Greenslade to make it 3–0.

Budleigh were now well on top as the game headed towards half time.

There was then an incident on the pitch which spiralled out of control and led to the referee calling a halt to the proceedings.

After listening to the opinion of spectators from both sides, and also neutrals, the general consensus seemed to suggest the match official perhaps could have separated the two teams, taken the managers and captains to one side and then allowed things to calm down before resuming play.

That said, it was a volatile situation and the incident shocked everybody unfortunate enough to witness it!

Budleigh are back in action this Saturday when they travel to Sector Lane for another league encounter with Axminster Town.
