Budleigh impress in win at Newton Abbot

Newton Abbot Spurs 1, Budleigh Salterton 3

After a couple of disappointing drawn games to start the new year the Robins returned from their visit to Newton Abbot with three points after a well deserved victory, writes Alan Beer.

The opening goal came after just eight minutes when the home side failed to clear a cross from the left wing. George Pannell found space at the back of the 6-yard box to loop a header over stranded keeper, Jamie Bradley. The home keeper was kept busy in the opening half an hour, but, against the run of play it was the hosts who scored next to level the game. A loose cross fell for Russell Brooker to fire home from close range. The Robins soon regained the lead when keeper Bradley allowed Matt Dawson’s 20-yard free-kick to slip through his legs!

A minute before the break Dawson headed home a Carl Everest free-kick delivered to the near post and the visiting side went in at the interval 3-1 to the good.

With 65 minutes gone the score was nearly added to when Callum Shipton’s good through ball for Pannell saw the latter fire marginally wide of the target.

The home side then went close to reducing the deficit and Jordan Hockold in the visitor’s goal, was forced to make a smart save, the ball rebounding to Glen Palmer who saw his goal bound effort cleared off the line by Tim Bradshaw.

The Robins were denied a fourth late on when Shipton’s shot looked to have clearly crossed the line well before player-boss Danny Williams applied a touch, but the linesman flagged for off-side and the ‘goal’ did not count.

Budleigh team: Hockhold, Bradshaw, Sale (Carr), Everest, Lever, English, Hill (Wright), Shipton, Dawson, Pannell, Greenslade (Williams).

On Saturday Budleigh are in action at Alphington (3pm) and they are also in mid-week action next week with the Greenway Lane visit to Okehampton with a 7.30pm kick-off on Wednesday, March 5.
