Budleigh denied famous victory by last gasp visiting goal

09:23 30 January 2014

Budleigh Salterton 1, Exwick Villa

After a rain soaked period since early December the Robins finally got to play again, writes Alan Beer.

However, yet again, the weather played a big part, this time it was a strong and blustery wind making it very difficult to control the ball!

Budleigh started well, but missed chances. The first of these was after 10 minutes when Jack English saw his hooked shot through the 6-yard box go just wide.

The first threat from Villa came on 24 minutes when Callum Hoare shot wide from close range, and then Shaun Densham fired wide when one on one with Jordan Hockold in the home goal.

On 40 minutes Man of the Match, English, had a shot saved by visiting keeper Tonkin and following up fired into the side netting.

The Robins broke the deadlock seven minutes into the second period when a through ball from English found Jack Greenslade who chipped over Tonkin from 18 yards to cheer the Greenway Lane faithful.

On 80 minutes the Robins failed to double their lead when, after Danny Williams had been fouled in the area, Tonkin brilliantly saved Matt Dawson’s spot kick. It then looked as though the home side were going to settle for the one goal advantage.

In time added on a long clearance fell very kindly for Villa’s Harry Taylor to touch in and level the score.

Budleigh team: Hockhold, Bradshaw, Ellis, Everest, Pallett, English, Lever, Pannell (Demetre), Dawson, Shipton (Williams), Greenslade. Subs not used; Wright, Carr.

On Saturday the Robins travel to Alphington and the game kicks off in Exeter at 3pm.
