Brixington United Under-11s march on in League Cup

21:34 15 January 2014

Brixington United 4, Alphington 2

Brixington United Under-11s progressed through to the quarter finals of the Exeter and District League cup with an extra-time success over Alphington Panthers.

Alphington who play in a division higher than Brixington went into the game as clear favourites but didn’t expect to come up against a Brixington side with so much fight and commitment.

Brixington were under attack right from the kick off and the boggy conditions and slope didn’t help their cause. Alphington went ahead after 10 minutes but some solid defending from Jack Ottaway, George Gelling and Rory Craib managed to repel the Alphington attackers time and time again. Against the run of play Brixington managed to grab an equalizer just before the break through Tom Real.

The second half it was all Brixington and they took a well deserved lead with a scrambled goal from Ryan Daffin. It looked like Brixington were going through until Alphington managed to score in the dying minutes to take the game to extra time.

The first-half of extra time was end to end, but neither team managed to break the deadlock. Brixington came out for the second half of extra time with their spirits high and took the game to Alphington. Joe Graham worked tirelessly on the right and after some good work played in Ryan Daffin who had his shot saved twice before Tom Real tapped home the rebound. Brixington tails were up now and they went on the attack again, a long clearance from Freddie Cotton found Daffin who ran straight at the Alphington defence before putting his low shot into the far corner and making the final score 4-2.

Both teams were clapped off the pitch after a thoroughly entertaining match played in the true spirit of the game.
