Axmouth United celebrate winning the Golesworthy Cup

Despite missing out on promotion having made such a good start to the season, Axmouth United finished the season well in cup competitions.

United defended their Carlisle Cup trophy all, the way to the final which they contested last night (Tuesday, May 27 against Honiton Town Reserves), and last midweek they landed the Golesworthy Cup for the first time, beating Feniton in the final.

United made a flying start to the game with Feniton. They dominated the opening exchanges and it was no more than they deserved when they took an eighth minute lead when Jamie Hughes headed home a Scott Dyer corner at the near post. More pressure saw Axmouth double the lead 10 minutes later when Man of the Match George Harwood flighted a perfect angled pass which was met on the volley by Christian Burridge to thunder home from the corner of the box. Axmouth continued to dominate, but the Feniton keeper was in inspired form making several flying stops to prevent Burridge again and Reece Hales strikes and keeping his side in the game at the break.

From the re-start Feniton upped their game and began to get a foothold and were rewarded when a half clearance was met with a drive from the edge of the box which, despite Ax glovesman Bradley Cross getting his hand to, he couldn’t prevent it finding the net to make it 2-1 in the 55th minute. The goal certainly lifted Feniton as they mounted more pressure as Axmouth failed to perform to the same standard as their first 45 minutes.

However, they showed great spirit, determination and team ethic to see the game out and indeed thought they scored a third with 10 minutes left only for a late flag to be raised for offside. A final flurry from Feniton saw a late corner and free kick which was well saved again by Cross, ensuring Axmouth were victorious at the whistle.

United boss Lawrie Forino said: “I am really proud of the lads for once again they have showed what a fantastic team spirit and togetherness there is at the club. The team played some wonderful football, especially in the first half when we could have been out of sight if their keeper hadn’t been in such great form. A great deal of credit though to Feniton for coming back at us in the second half and make a real game of it for the watching decent size crowd, but I felt we were deserved winners in the end. It’s a great way to end a long season and could get better yet with the Carlisle Cup to come although we all expect another real battle with Honiton Reserves when we hope our supporters will be out in force again.”
