Atkinson nets consolation in East Budleigh home defeat

East Budleigh suffered a 4-1 home defeat when they entertained Thorverton in their latest Macron League Division Two game, writes Mark Auton.

The home side were playing catch-up from the word go in this fixture, gifting their opponents a two goal start with some sloppy defending!

Midway through the half, Budleigh were back in the game when a fine through-ball from Liam Mabin picked out Dan Atkinson, who lifted a neat finish over the advancing keeper.

Despite the Budleigh goal, the away side were having the better of it as Budleigh were giving the ball away far too much.

The back three of Mabin, Steve Hitchcock and Jack England were having to work hard.

Budleigh began the second period with more confidence; England rattled the bar and when Atkinson saw his shot blocked Jacob Rice was unable to keep the rebound below the crossbar.

As Budleigh continued to push, it was Thorverton who broke to add a 71st minute third before a fourth, six minutes later.

Towards the end Hugo Demetre was marginally wide and when Rice set up Liam West his shot was parried by the visiting stopper.

This Saturday (December 16), Budleigh are again at home to Uplowman hoping to sign off with a festive victory.
