Alphington Ladies 2, Exmouth Amateurs 1

A second successive meeting with Alphington, this time in the League Cup, ended in another narrow defeat for the Ammies who once again made the much fancied Alphas work very hard for their triumph.

After heavy overnight rain and a late pitch inspection the game went ahead but soon become a battle as the pitch quickly became a mud bath.

It was Ammies who began well working hard to stop the Alphas playing but when in possession having the quality to open up the home defence.

Worsley was the main benefactor of this using her pace to good effect and getting on the end of fine through balls from Harkness and Rawlings forcing the keeper into one great save and narrowly firing just over.

She then turned provider for Cordwell who just failed to get on the end of a fine cross and when Drury forced the keeper into another good stop Ammies looked in control.

Ammies deservedly took the lead after half an hour Harkness winning a tackle and as the ball fell to Rawlings her slide rule ball found Worsley who drilled the ball home.

Alphington were stung into action for the last part of the half and a mixture of great defending the bar and a couple of fine saves from keeper Rose kept Exmouths lead intact at the break.

The pattern for the second half was set early on as Alphington camped in Ammies box forcing a series of corners but they were unable to find a way past the back four of Jones Dunn Bedwell and Ashcroft and when they did they found keeper Rose in outstanding form.

Just as Ammies were beginning to contemplate a famous victory Alphington broke the offside trap with the striker Cooley finishing.

Five minutes later Alphington scored the winner a great ball from the right wing see keeper Rose bravely saving at the strikers feet but unluckily the ball bounced up off her knee before Alphington reacted quicker to stab home.

Ammies lay siege to the Alphington goal in the last ten minutes Worsley struck the bar from a free kick and a Rawlings free kick caused a goalmouth scramble only for the home keeper saved well.

Ammies were then denied a late penalty after what looked a push in the area.

Just as they had seven days previously, the Ammies deserve so much credit for the way they approached the match and it’s to their credit that they made the cup holders dig mighty deep before continuing in their pursuit of another trophy.
