Exmouth Amateur Ladies 1, Alphington Ladies 3

Ammies took on the much fancied Alphas in the first of three successive meetings with the Exeter-based side.

With the visitors favourites to land both league and cup honours this season Ammies went into the game upbeat, but expecting to have a tough afternoon. As it happened they made Alphington work very hard for their success!

Ammies made the worst possible start with the Alphas scoring from their very first attack. It was soon 2-0 with a visiting player lobbing Ammies keeper Rose.

Two down with a long way to go, Ammies could easily have shouldered arms and conceded more. However, driven on by a large home support they battled back and took a serious foot-hold in the contest. The midfield trio of Rawlings, Harkness and Cordwell enjoyed plenty of possession, and, with striker Steele holding the ball up well, Ammies began to create chances.

Wills had a shot blocked and saw another effort fly fractionally wide. Rowe then brought a superb save out of the Alphas keeper before Wills latched onto a superb pass from Steele to stroke the ball home to halve the deficit.

There was an element of controversy in the way that the visitors restored their two goal advantage just before the break. There appeared to be little contact on an Alphas striker, but a free-kick was awarded and the ‘fouled’ player promptly slammed the ball into the back of the net!

Sensing something of an injustice, Ammies took charge of the second half with the pace of Wills, Cordwell and Worsley a constant thorn in the visitor’s side. Three times Wills saw shots well saved by the Alphington keeper who also denied Cordwell with the save of the match!

Ammies back four defended brilliantly in the second half restricting Alphington to long range shots, one of which cannoned back off the crossbar.

A couple of late corners caused alarm in the Alphington area, but to no avail for Ammies who, although beaten, were certainly not disgraced and they can go into their next two meetings with Alphington with plenty of belief.
