Sidmouth 10, Exmouth 15
Exmouth Under-12s travelled to Sidmouth for their first match of the season and with little time for preparation Exmouth were put under early pressure and despite some desperate defending Sidmouth crossed for the first try.
Possession throughout the first half was fairly evenly matched but it was all played in the Exmouth half giving little opportunity for the visitors to balance the score.
Following the half-time break Exmouth began to take the game to Sidmouth and the young cockles were closing down the opposition and forcing some errors in the Sidmouth defence which provided an attacking platform.
Following a ruck deep in the Sidmouth half the ball was turned over in Exmouth’s favour by Harry Neath Rogers who passed to Ben Dawson but just as Sidmouth thought they had thwarted the attack just short of the line Dawson was able to offload to Richard Forrest to level for Exmouth.
Exmouth were then caught napping from the restart and Sidmouth were again five points up following a quick try.
Perhaps this was the wake up call the Cockles needed and from then on it was all much better from Exmouth with Sidmouth having to defend for long periods. The pace of the Exmouth backs was complementing the forwards and Dawson was quick to gather a ball which popped out of the ruck and dive over to level the score again.
This time Exmouth were alert and from the restart worked the ball back into Sidmouth territory.
Sidmouth were defending well, but eventually Exmouth scored what proved to be the match winning try to secure a 15-10 success.
