Camelford 0, Exmouth Town 2
Exmouth Town travelled back from North Cornwall with the three points that have taken them to the top of the SWPL Premier Division, writes John Dibsdall.
This Saturday they will be looking to cement their position when Launceston are the visitors to Southern Road with the match having a 3pm kick-off.
Town were 1-0 winners when the sides met in what was the second match of the season thanks to a Jamie Moore strike, but they had to withstand considerable pressure and the Cornish side are enjoying a successful season and currently lie fourth in the table.
At Camelford Town were dominant for long periods but it took them sixty minutes to open the scoring. In the first half Town’s best efforts came from right wing corners taken by Dan Boere.
The first after eight minutes saw Kevin Hill head the cross into the six yard box where Ed Weeks then saw his header hit the underside of the bar and eventually cleared. After twenty minutes another corner and this time a right foot volley from Hill produced a fine save from the home custodian.
The second half began in a similar vein with Town taking the match to the home side and eventually made the breakthrough.
Boere’s first time pass found James Ansell in space and his excellent cross was inch perfect for Ace High to head home. The home side briefly increased their tempo without ever troubling Chris Wright in Town’s goal. The second goal came on seventy six minutes and followed a spell of sustained pressure. Lloyd Gardner had a drive turned away for a corner from which High was just unable to find a finishing touch. Another corner resulted and this time as his cross was returned to him Adam Fowler’s shot was blocked and Karl Rickard was on hand to volley home the loose ball.
This was Town’s first game for four weeks and they will have been pleased to have had some important match practice under their belts as there will be sterner challenges to come.
The only downside was a bad gash sustained by Moore and Hill having to pull up with an Achilles problem both being substituted in the first half. Town should have Danny Clay back after his one match suspension and it was good to see his brother Ben back in training following his ligament damage at the end of last season.
