Exmouth Town 0, Budleigh Salterton 2
Two first half goals saw Exmouth Town fall at the first hurdle of the Throgmorton Cup at the hands of Budleigh from along the coast, writes Rob Jennings.
Being a division above the Robins, Exmouth started the stronger and hit the crossbar from a ninth minute free kick. But it was the visitors who took a shock lead eight minutes later with a header from a corner.
In the torrential rain, the home side almost replied instantly, but were halted by a duo of reflex saves. A series of Exmouth long shots and set pieces followed, which were either dealt with or ended up next door.
Then, seven minutes prior to half time, Budleigh grabbed a second - sweeping past the keeper from six yards.
Shortly after the break Town had a penalty shout turned down, then a late rash challenge on Dan Boere really should have produced a game-changing red. But the referee opted for yellow, also penalising Boere for his stamping reaction!
This decision perhaps prevented Exmouth from capitalising on their late dominance - including another clearance on the line, a header glancing wide, and striker Ace High chipping over the keeper, but just round the bar.
Salterton held out, meaning their Town rivals have been eliminated from two cup competitions in eight days - losing by the same 0-2 score line at home to Buckland Athletic in the FA Vase previously – a complete contrast to last season’s cup runs. Elsewhere in the Throgmorton Cup first round for Exeter area clubs - Exwick Villa fell 1-2 on Friday in Crediton, Exeter Uni thumped five past Bude Town, and Alphington conceded six away to Vospers Oak Villa.
Exmouth’s only remaining chance of knockout competition silverware is the Devon St Luke’s Bowl - in which they are the lowest ranked side and must overcome young professionals of Exeter City at St James Park on October 16, to progress.
