Next Tuesday (October 8) there’s a very special football match taking place at the Southern Road home of Exmouth Town.
The resurrected Rose Bowl Sporting challenge will be competed between a representative football team from the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines and Exmouth Town.
The Rose Bowl was presented by the Exmouth Urban District Council for the annual competition between the town of Exmouth and the Royal Marines in sporting events and in the commemoration of the adoption of the Royal Marines by the town of Exmouth on May 10, 1968.
The contest took place annually between the years of 1969 to 1991 with the town of Exmouth winning 15 times, Commando Training Centre Royal Marines five times and a draw in 1972. Between 1992 and 2003 the fixture was dormant and the last recorded fixture was 2004 when the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines were victorious and the current holders.
The Rose Bowl was rededicated by Exmouth Town Council to commemorate the enduring relationship between the Royal Marines and the Town of Exmouth on the occasion of the re-adoption of the Royal Marines by the town of Exmouth on June 22, 2013.
The kick off for this prestige fixture will be at 7.30pm, a donation of £3 will be charged on the night and children will be admitted free. The chairman of Exmouth Town FC, Mr Bob Chamberlain has kindly agreed that all gate proceeds will split equally between the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines chosen charity, the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund and the mayor’s chosen charity, Hospicecare.
The gates will open at 6pm with pre match entertainment supplied by the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines Band commencing at 6.45 pm.
Hot and Cold Refreshments will be available to purchase throughout the match.
Fixtures between Exmouth Town FC and the Royal Marines historically have been hard fought, competitive and extremely entertaining with both sides having an equal share of the spoils.
Town boss Richard Pears has had previous experience with the Marines when he successfully managed the Royal Marines AFC side in the SW Peninsula Premier League in 2010/11 and is looking forward to pitting his wits against the Marines in this prestige fixture.
