Exmouth Swimming and Life Saving society ended 2013 with a fine gala at Weston-super-Mare’s Hutton Moor pool in the B final of the Division T Western National Arena League, writes Ian Lang.
The other teams swimming were Barry from Wales, Lydney/Cinderford, Ifracombe, Devonport Royals and Oddicombe.
It was a close gala from start to finish with only three points separating the top four teams after 10 events.
The girl’s under-11s started the next ten events well with the relay team finishing first followed by Heidi Schunck winning the 50m backstroke; this helped the team to joint first with Lydney and Devonport.
Some consistent swimming in the next ten events helped Exmouth into second place behind Lydney. The girl’s under-11s gained maximum points with wins for LilyMay Girvin in the 50m breaststroke and Lizzie Walker in the 50m freestyle. Not to be outdone, Jack Moss swam to success in the men’s 100m freestyle and that kept Exmouth in touch with the leaders. The boy’s under-15 freestyle team also finished first.
With 10 events to go Exmouth were just one point ahead of Ilfracombe. The girl’s under-11s kept up their fine day’s work with yet another win this time in the medley relay.
It was nail biting finish with spectators and club officials working out very quickly what the final two senior relay teams had to do to keep Exmouth in second place. The ladies taking fourth place and the men finishing second was enough for Exmouth to stay second and beat Ilfracombe by a single point.
With the final division league table still to be confirmed it is safe to say that Exmouth will have kept their place in Division Two for next season which is a great achievement after being promoted for this season.
Final gala results: 1, Lydney/Cinderford 200 points, 2, Exmouth 177, 3, Ilfracombe 176, 4, Oddicombe 174, 5, Devonport 161, 6, Barry 148
