Exmouth 15, Newton Abbot 19
The Cockles suffered a disappointing defeat when beaten in the first of the season’s Devon derbies at the Imperial Ground.
Having won each of the previous four encounters, the home side went into the game with the added boost of having won their opening match seven days before at Malvern.
Indeed, with just seven minutes to play the Cockles held what looked a match-winning 15-9 lead, but were undone in the closing moments.
The visitors had struck first, tucking away an early penalty before a Tom Kill try was converted by Andrew Powell to see the home side into the lead.
Newton Abbot registered a second successful penalty before the break, but Exmouth went in with a 10-6 lead thanks to a Powell penalty on the stroke of half-time.
A drop goal hauled the visitors to within a point early in the second half. However, on the hour mark Powell created an overlap that George Savage took full advantage of to cross the visiting line to put the Cockles in charge.
With seven minutes to go a penalty from out wide was slotted by Newton Abbot who then went over after a series of mauls and they also notched an injury-time penalty to depart with the spoils.
