Exmouth head to Taunton on Saturday looking to put the disappointment of their opening day 9-3 defeat (not the 60-3 loss the back page of the Exmouth Journal suggested this week – and for that the sports editor apologies to all Cockles followers for a faux-pas of gigantic proportions!)
With both the Cockles and Taunton losing their opening National Two (South) matches – Taunton were beaten at Bournemouth,
Exmouth director of rugby Chris Wright says: “It’s a big game in as much as neither side will want to be looking at a played two and lost two start to the new campaign. For our part we were poor in our game with Chinnor, but much of that was down to the massive changes of playing personnel we have undergone to prepare for life at the higher level. Taunton may have also lost, but in their case they did so scoring three tries though in somewhat contrasting conditions of glorious sunshine to the wind we endured at the Imperial Ground!”
Wright continued: “We are going to have to make some enforced changes owing to injury and unavailability, but that’s why we have put together the squad we have, to cope with such eventualities. The big thing is that common senses suggest the changes we have made demand time for the period of bedding in and gelling as a team. We are working hard towards that, but at this level we can ill afford to take too long to gel. We have genuine quality in the ranks and feel the people we have put together are very capable of doing it at this level. We don’t have bags of time with this and need to make sure we are sharper at Taunton than we were at home to Chinnor.”
