On a nice bright sunny day eight sea angling clubs fished against each other for the Westward Festival Shield, writes Mike Spiller.
The eight teams all consisted of eight anglers who had to fish at seven shore venues which were at Branscombe and Seaton and one boat zone which was out from Beer on Kim Aplin’s boat Sambi.
Conditions for the competition were good on the day and some excellent fish were caught and released in what was a catch, weigh and release event.
Amongst the catches were mullet, mackerel, garfish, wrasse, dogfish, whiting, flounder and plaice. The best fish from the shore was a mullet of 5lb 8oz caught by Exmouth member Mike Richardson.
The best angler on the boat section turned out to be Bill Cassar from the host club at Sidmouth. One good fish that was caught on the boats was a cracking black bream of nearly 4lb 8oz, caught by David Waddington from Budleigh Salterton.
The results of the event were; 1, Weston Outcast (56 points); 2, Honiton SAC (44); 3, Watchett (40); 4, Sidmouth and Exmouth (44); 5, Beer (33); 6, Budleigh (20) and 7, Blackdown (12).
