Exmouth power lifter Collison cronwed the world’s best!

Exmouth has a new World Champion to celebrate after Paul Collinson returned from the world power lifting championships in Dusseldorf, Germany, with two world titles, writes Steve Birley.

Collison, a former Royal Marine captain who left the service two years ago after a distinguished career only took up the sport of power lifting last year!

He can now lay claim to the title of world champion and world record holder in the bench category after he beat the previous best, a 155kg lift that had stood for 14-years, by lifting 160kg!

During the competition he had initially three lifts which saw him first lift a new European record weight of 151kg. He then lifted a new world record weight of 156kg before finally taking the world’s best even higher to that 160kg.

Not one to rest on his laurels the former Royal Marine then took part in the dead lift section of the championships and promptly bagged a new personal best to land a second world title!

He said: “Power lifting is a sport that I virtually fell into. Suffering from arthritis has restricted me in recent years as to what sort of sport I can do. I am not one to sit around and it was my son who had seen something about power lifting and he suggested to me that I give it a go. The rest, as they say, is history and now I am on top of the world.”

In a remarkably short space of time Collison, who only began competitive lifting last December when he won South West bench and dead lift titles setting new records, has risen to be the best in the world.
