The final matchings are now in place for Exmouth Boxing club’s first show of the season at the Pavilion this Saturday (December 1) at 7.30pm, writes Phil Crook.
For the first time in more than 20 years the building will shake to the punching power of four light heavy weight bouts and a super heavy weight scrap.
Grant Retallick, the giant cornishman from Camborne will clash with Cortny Richards from Carl’s boxing club, Plymouth. Richards has a record of sevens wins from eight while Retallick’s record is six from nine so an explosive encounter is expected.
Top of the bill though goes to the local derby between Matt Case and Lympstone’s Sam Walkey. Both boxers have worked hard in the gym since their last clash and a furious contest is in prospect.
Another mouth watering bout is Jared Jones (Lympstone) against Aaron Edwards from Tiverton. Jones, fresh from his scintillating win last Friday at Bideford, a victory that drew high praise on the internet from one leading judge: “Jared Jones is the most improved boxer in Devon after that showing”. Edwards has won twice since he beat Jones in October.
The other local derby is between Josh Pender (Exmouth) and Jon Fenton-Harvey (Lympstone). Harvey was another to have a good win last weekend and Pender won’t be able to show any ring rust after six years out, if he is to claim victory.
Another making a return is James Skinner, who last boxed in March 2008. His opponent Tom Allum (Barnstaple) hadn’t even started boxing then, but he has since had over 20 bouts, so James will be another with no time to find his feet and it is hoped that the 70 rounds of sparring that he has done will be enough to bridge the experience gap. A 14 bout bill has been prepared and tickets priced at £25 for ringside or £12 for the main hall will be on sale from 6.30 on the night.
