Exmouth’s much-anticipated opening fixture in National Two (South) ended in disappointment as the Cockles were beaten 9-3 by Chinnor at the Imperial Ground, writes Stephen Birley.
Exmouth director of rugby Chris Wright was clear as to what the difference was between the sides.
Wright said: “We made too many errors, not massive ones but sufficient to cause our downfall. At this level you cannot get away with that. Twice in the closing stages we had opportunities to win it, but did not take them and it is that element of sharpness that will be the difference between last season and this.”
He continued: “We have to be realistic about things. There were no fewer than eleven new faces in the 20-man squad and just three of the starting team were in the side that beat Dorking in the promotion play-off. We’ll need time to gel things together, but with hard work we’ll get there.”
On Saturday Exmouth make the short trip to Taunton who were also beaten on the opening day, in their case, losing 42-21 at Bournemouth.
