Round 1 was held on April 1, at the Exwick playing fields in Exeter so that there are now six races, one on the first Tuesday of each every month from April to September inclusive.

There were five Exmouth Harriers competing last week, all male. In terms of the standard of the event as a whole it is somewhere between the club runner dominated Westward Cross Country League and the big road races where the majority are taking on a one-off challenge, often for charity. There were 104 finishers just short of the highest number ever.

They were rewarded with excellent conditions-a flat course, little wind and a temperature which was probably just right. Three Harriers finished in the top twenty. Chris Dupain’s recent progress has not slowed. He was 14th and posted a very good 18:18, believed to be a new personal best by around 30 seconds. He was no doubt helped to this achievement by the close proximity of club-mate Jon Garrity who was just seven seconds (about 30 metres) behind Chris, finishing 15th in 18:25, Jon was also second in the Men Aged 40-44 category. Richard Hawes would have had these two in his sights as he finished 20th in 18:44, this giving him first place in his Men Age 45-49 age group. In 52nd was Andrew Johnson in 20:47 and in 68th Dave Eveleigh in 21:39. These are not bad time at all for a 50 and 60 year-old respectively, but such is the standard of veteran athletes now that neither was in the first three of their age category.
