Exmouth endured bitter sweet feelings at stumps on the final day of the Francis Clark Devon league season.
The Maer men duly won their last day game, beating the only side to sit above them in the top flight table at the start of the day.
However, the fact that Sidmouth began the day 13 points clear was to prove crucial for they ended the game with sufficient points to ensure that they were celebrating a league and cup double.
To win the title Exmouth had to bag a twenty points victory and deny Sidmouth the seven points that would see them crowned kings once again.
Sidmouth posted a total of 1223-4 from their 50 overs. George Greenway (2-46), Jamie Tapper (1-37) and Trevor Anning (1-43) were the successful wicket takers for Exmouth.
The Maer ground faithful were then treated to another David Lye master-class with the bat as he stroked his way to a 107-ball knock of 96 with seven 4s and three 6s.
Barney Huxtable struck a half century from the opening slot and Exmouth got home with four balls and six wickets to spare.
Sadly it ended in tears though for Sidmouth duly banked the points they needed leaving Exmouth to the runners-up berth.
Make sure of your copy of the Exmouth Journal (next out on Thursday, September 6) for all the match details.
