Exmouth bounced back to winning ways and climbed two places to sit second in the Francis Clark Devon League table after a 36-run win over North Devon at a sun-kissed Maer ground.

It proved to be not the best day the batsmen have enjoyed at Exmouth this season for there were just two partnerships of 50, the first and, crucially, the seventh as the home side closed on 225-8 after their 50 overs.

Sandy Allen (20) and skipper Richard Baggs (31) put on 50 for the first wicket. However, Bob Dawson (2) and David Lye (5) had rare failures with the bat and the only other top order batsmen to make any impression was Chris Metters with 25 from the number four berth.

At 147-6 after 31.1 overs the Maer men needed something special to post a competitive total and they got it from Trevor Anning as he hit the game’s top individual score of 75 in a run-a-ball stay at the wicket that saw him stroke five fours. Number eight bat Gary Chappell helped Anning add 73 for the seventh wicket, taking the total past 200 before he fell for 19.

Anning was the last man out, his fine knock coming to an end off the penultimate delivery of the innings with the closing total being 225-8.

Somerset player Jamie Overton opened the North Devon innings with Neil Bettis and the pair had put on 35 in just 23 balls when Chappell knocked over Overton’s stumps.

Bettis followed a run later, caught by wicket keeper Sandy Allen off Matt Coult.

Thereafter wickets fell at regular intervals with the final one going down with the visitors on 189 midway through the 48th over.

All six of the home bowlers used got a wicket with Coult bagging whilst Chappell and Lye picked up a brace each. The other wicket takers were Trevor Anning, Andy Buzza and Bob Dawson.

The win leaves Richard Baggs and his men sitting second, 36 points adrift of leaders Sidmouth and the halfway stage of the league campaign is reached this coming Saturday when the side travel top Plymouth.
