Over the last few weeks the Exmouth Journal has been reporting on the physical changes taking place at the Maer Ground as the Club prepares for the new season, writes Richard Butler.

This has included a refurbished Pavilion and new cricket nets. Work is also being completed on the outfield including re-seeding, fertilising, rolling and weeding, to ensure that everything is ready for the season ahead.

There has also been activity on the player front with several arrivals and some departures. Devon fast bowler Mark Orchard has returned to Brixham after a year at the Maer and up and coming quickie George Greenway has joined Exeter. On the other side of the coin, Richard Baggs, the Club Captain has recruited well, strengthening both the 1st and 2nd XIs. Former Gloucestershire player and Devon captain, Bobby Dawson, is “going home” to Exmouth after spells at Budleigh Salterton. Baggs said “Bobby wants to play Premier cricket and finish his career where he started as he is an Exmouth lad”. Also joining the Maer men are former Devon pacer Matt Webb, Matthew Coult from South Devon and Ian Taylor from Budleigh Salterton. Baggs also said that he hoped several members from last season’s 2nd XI would be banging on the selector’s door for the 1st XI.

Off the field, the Club has secured the sponsorship of Tolchards Drinks as main Club sponsors, and they, together with local sponsors will work in promoting the Club.

If you are interested in joining the Club either as a player or social member please visit the Club web site on www. exmouthcricketclub.co.uk for more information. Colts Cricket Practice starts this Friday at 6 pm and over the weekend two matches will take place. On Saturday the 1st XI entertain Bradninch (2pm) while on Sunday, Devon U 13s play a West v South area match starting at 11am.
