Members of the Exmouth Sea Angling Association contested the annual Coronation Cup.

Members of the Exmouth Sea Angling Association are this week fishing from the Isle of Wight.

Prior to their visit they were contesting the ESAA Coronation Cup. This competition, traditionally fished into the small hours, was this year fished from Weston to Branscombe.

Most anglers plumped for Branscombe which turned out to be the best choice, producing all the winning bags consisting of smoothound, dogfish, garfish, mackerel, pouting, huss and tub gurnard.

At the 2am finish the weigh-in took place declaring competition secretary, Brian ‘the Viking’ Reed the outright winner with Paul Rowe and Andy Browning taking the minor places.

There was special praise for little Kayleigh Rowe of Exmouth who gave Dad Paul a run for his money by ending up not far behind in fifth!

Little Kayleigh’s catch for the night included her first ever starry smoothound (a species of shark) which also gave her a new junior club record for the species.

As always, all fish were handled humanely and immediately returned to the water after being recorded.
