Exmouth Rowing Club junior rowers were the stand-out team at a re-scheduled Paignton regatta, finishing as the first two boats home, writes Kate Hurley

Performing in a Euro-Diff quad, borrowed from Torquay Rowing Club, Max Goodesmith, Tim Pearce, Dominic Hall and Greg Medlock took the lead from the start against composite opposition including adult coxed fours and an adult double.

Over a shortened course, with a volunteer cox from the Paignton club, they kept the pressure on throughout the race and won by a clear three lengths.

In second place were the crew of Charlie Angell, Billy Baxter, Peter Todd, Graham Hurley, and cox Mike Drew.

A delighted Billy Baxter said: “These are early days for the club’s junior rowers, but the early signs are very encouraging.Their technique was excellent, but the most remarkable feature of their success was that they rowed a boat they had never sat in before, never mind raced in.”

Charlie Angell said: On the home straight, when we were trying to catch them, I thought their stamina would go. Sadly, that never happened, but a runners-up berth is a great achievement.”

So a big boathouse round of applause for the Paignton winners. Clinching proof that all those hours on the Ergo are certainly paying off!
