Exmouth Harrier Mike Keep first man over 70 at latest Ironbridge 5k series meet

For runners the extra hours of daylight which summer brings means plenty of welcome opportunity to race in the evening when it is just that little bit cooler and often less windy, writes Dave Eveleigh.

On Tuesday of last week seven Exmouth Harriers took one of the season’s regular opportunities of this kind when they ran in the third race of the Ironbridge Runner 5K Series as part of a field 92 strong.

Mike Keep was 77th, but he merits a place at the top of the bill by virtue of him being first man over 70 years and by jogging away with a Personal Best! Les Turner, another septuagenarian was 89th in 28:35. Bang in the middle of the field was Andrew Johnson, 45th in 20:35 and second Man Age 50-54. There were four Exmouth Harriers in the first 15 places. At the finish line Mike Musgrove was ninth in 17:17, just one place and one second ahead of Pete Fletcher, that all-important in-club rivalry dragging them through to very good times, that of Pete believed to be a personal best. Then not far back Jon Garrity was 14th in 18:27 with Chris Dupain in 15th just four seconds slower. The Series continues on July 1, at the same Exwick location in Exeter.
