Exmouth cycle ace Will Tidball was in action in his first road race of the year when he travelled to the Belgium city of Brussels last week.

Will was competing in the Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne meeting and he raced as part of a GB team consisting of five riders.

Will rode superbly to finish seventh and he was the top placed cyclist in his team.

He says of his performance: “This is a good result and bodes well for the rest of the road season to come.

“The race was 125km, probably our longest of the year.

“My endurance in the past has been poor, but having ridden this long race my legs dealt really well with the endurance.

“There were 169 entered and only 70 finished, showing how hard this race was in what were freezing conditions.

“My team-mate damaged his eyes as he raced without glasses so we made a trip to Accident and Emergency on the way home!”

So, what next for Will? On Saturday (March 10), he will be in Manchester for a training camp with Team GB and then he has a race back in Belgium – the Gent Wevelgem meeting in which he will race as part of Team GB.

A couple of weeks after that he has a 125-mile road race in France, the Paris-Roubaix, which involves racing over 35km of cobblestones!

Will says: “That will be an experience and I am hoping my form will continue to be good as we approach the French race.”

He continued: “I am in the process of negotiating with my sponsors Fast Fwd, a reduced price for 45mm carbon wheels and tyres specifically for this attritional cobbled race.

“Last year, many failed to complete this race due to destruction by racing on the cobbles.

“Winners of this race tend to go on to do really well in the professional circuit.”
